Pat McGrath sure knows how to end NYFW with a bang. Just as the week was starting to slow down, and we were all about to catch a much needed breath, the makeup artist decided to throw everyone into a tizzy backstage at Anna Sui when she very subtly hinted at a new Pat McGrath Labs product launch. And this is only days after announcing she’d be re-releasing two of her other kits.
And I mean it when I say a subtle hint. “Inspired by decadence and eccentricity of the collection, we did a rich burgundy mouth and a beautiful rich blue pigment on the eyes that’s based on a blue used in the collection,” she told us backstage when describing the look for the show. “It’s a look that’s all about fun and all about that blue pigment ladies.” To many of us exhausted beauty editors, we just figured Pat was being her usually cheery self. It wasn’t until she took to Instagram an hour after the show that I was able to put two and two together.
“Divine decadence backstage at @officialannasui…Coming soon from Pat McGrath Labs…#StayTuned #makeupbypatmcgrath #NYFW.” And there you have it. Every single one of McGrath’s launches—starting with Gold 001 and ending with her most recent launch, Metalmorphosis 005—has been teased on Instagram in a similar manner, and I don’t think this instance is any different.
While McGrath could throw us for a loop and launch a new burgundy lipstick, or maybe a mascara (the models’ lashes at Anna Sui were extremely long), the most logical assumption is that she’ll be coming out with a new blue pigment. If you’re a Pat McGrath Labs fanatic, then you know McGrath has launched a blue before. It was one of the four pigments in her second launch: Phantom 002. This new shade of blue, however, appears to be richer and bluer (at least in person it did), more like an Yves Klein blue than the sapphire hue in Phantom 002.
In addition to the blue pigment, which was doled out to McGrath’s team members in little plastic cups, she also added a layer of blue glitter to the lids to up the decadence factor. Perhaps the sixth Pat McGrath Labs product launch will include a pigment and a loose glitter? (And a mascara? Please Pat! Launch a mascara!! Sorry, I digress). And perhaps this is what she and Kim Kardashian were up to earlier this week. Eitehr way, I don’t think we’ll have to wait very long for more details. We’ve got three more weeks left of fashion month—first London, then Milan, and lastly Paris—which means McGrath will most likely be whipping out her new product sometime soon, and we’ll be watching her every move (backstage and on her Instagram) very, very closely.
