CORONATION Street’s dramatic sex grooming storyline has reportedly caused shockwaves amongst the soap’s writers.
Ever since Nathan Curtis saved Bethany Platt when she collapsed after taking a lot of diet pills, the sinister character has been seen manipulating the teen by showering her with compliments and presents and boosting her confidence.
The latest episode saw Nathan and Bethany kiss after he ‘admitted’ that he had a crush on her.
However, it appears they weren’t the only ones.
Scriptwriter Jan McVerry has revealed that there were “heated discussions” about the storyline due to the nature of the subject.
“I think it’s an important story to tell for young people, particularly those who may be lacking in self confidence.
“There are worries these unscrupulous b******s get in your lives and lure you away,” she added to the Daily Star.
“It is a very dark subject. My own children are teenagers but others with very young children have asked, ‘should we be going into this darker territory?
“We have had many discussions on how to tell this story.”
Actress Lucy Fallon, who plays the role of troubled Bethany recently warned viewers that the scenes between Sarah Platt’s daughter and Nathan are set to get a lot darker.
“Already on Twitter people are telling Bethany to stay away from Nathan,” the young star said.
“I think they’re going to hate watching the way he manipulates her, it’s an uncomfortable watch but it’s an important issue to tackle.”
Explaining that she wanted to take on this dark storyline to raise awareness, Lucy added: “I was excited because it’s such a gritty storyline, I’m really flattered to be chosen to play it and I hope we can do it justice.
“But I was also quite nervous because it’s such a sensitive subject matter and not something that a lot of people openly talk about.
“It’s about how vulnerable people can be in relationships and how controlling people can be, especially if you’re a young girl.”
Coronation Street continues on ITV at 7.30pm.
