EastEnders was full of drama on Friday evening as Ben Mitchell, played by Harry Reid, attempted to leave the country with Aidan Maguire’s ex Ciara’s money.
Soap watchers knew that the character was leaving the hit BBC One soap after three years, with the storyline being kept top secret.
However, after Mel Owen managed to get on the same ferry as him – heading from Dover to Calais – she wasn’t able to get him to change his mind about leaving or handing over the cash.
And as Ben made his way off the ferry to start his new life, Mel made a phone call, while the former mechanic was called in by security to have his bags checked.
After panicking that his wads of cash would be discovered, Ben was left stunned to discover that the money had been replaced by newspapers instead.
Ben then made his way out of the ferry terminal with his suitcase empty, but soon started smiling when he pulled out a wad of cash from his coat pocket.
Meanwhile, Ciara could be seen glaring at him from the other side of the terminal.
Soap watchers were left both confused over what had happened to the money and baffled over Ben’s final scenes, which were confirmed by Harry and the soap, arguing that he deserved a bigger send off as they expected more.
One person said: “Was that Bens exit!?!?!? Because if it was, he deserved so much better!! #EastEnders.”
A different user put: “Ben deserved a better exit than that #EastEnders.”
Another show watcher commented: “Feel Ben deserved a better exit #EastEnders.”
While a different viewer added: “If that was really Ben’s exit then he deserved better cause I’m so confused… #EastEnders.”
However, not all fans felt this way, and some soap watchers loved the surprise ending.
One person said: “Haha omfg love that Mel totally outsmarted ben #EastEnders @mouthwaite loving it.”
While a different account added: “Gutted that was @HarryReid16 last episode of #eastenders did a fab job playing Ben. Will be missed x.”
EastEnders continues on BBC One.
